Clean water is a concern for everyone around the globe, including families here in the U.S. One major contaminant that has become a problem for the water industry is PFAS – perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances – which have been linked to cancer and other health concerns. PureBlue H2O is here to help you stay informed and stay healthy with high-quality home water filtration systems. About PFAS

PFAS is a category that describes a group of man-made chemicals. PFOA and PFOS are the most common among these chemicals to be found and studied. These chemicals have been used since the 1940s, but because of an EPA phase-out program, they are no longer manufactured in the U.S. However, they are still produced internationally and can be imported through consumer goods.

Because PFAS are resistant to oil, water, and grease, and they can be used in a number of different ways, they are found in products across industries. Common products made with PFAS include stain-resistant fibers, cleaning products, plastics and rubber, fire-fighting foams, and non-stick cookware.

PFAS Exposure

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) reassures the public that exposure to PFAS through consumer goods is unlikely, since the chemicals are often bonded to the materials in question. The most likely way you may be exposed to PFAS is through contaminated drinking water or through food grown with contaminated soil or water. The FDA is currently testing the general food supply for PFAS, but the organization does not consider it a significant threat.

When it comes to contaminated drinking water, on the other hand, there have been several cases of here in the U.S., typically in areas local to a facility where PFAS is produced or used. You can reference the Environmental Protection Agency’s health advisories regarding PFOA and PFOS to learn more. Keep in mind that if your drinking water is contaminated, ordinary water pitcher filters are not enough to effectively remove – or even reduce – the levels of PFAS in your drinking water.

One important thing to know about these chemicals is that they are persistent — a term that means they don’t break down easily. If you are exposed, these chemicals can remain in your body for a long period and accumulate over time to reach a point of toxicity.

Effects of PFAS

What happens if you are exposed to toxic levels of PFAS? These chemicals have been linked to a number of health concerns. Lab animals exposed to these substances grew tumors and experienced reproductive and developmental problems, as well as liver, kidney, and immunological effects.

In humans, there is evidence that PFAS leads to increased cholesterol levels. There have also been studies that link the chemicals to:

  • Cancer
  • Affected immunity
  • Low birth weights in infants
  • Thyroid hormone disruption

How to Address PFAS

Home water filtration can offer you peace of mind when facing possible chemical contamination, but only if you choose the right system. Ordinary water filters simply don’t do enough to clean your water. Instead, look for products certified by the NSF (National Sanitation Foundation).
